1. Customer Background and Project Overview

1.1 GROHE Brand Profile

GROHE is a global premium bathroom fittings brand from Germany. It is known for strict quality control, advanced product design, and reliable product performance, and has strong brand recognition in the high-end bathroom market.

1.2 Project Background

For high-end bathroom equipment sold worldwide, the color accuracy, marking clarity, weather and waterproof performance, and batch stability of operation panels are critical to product positioning and end-user experience.

In 2017, GROHE launched development for the Grohtherm Smart Control thermostatic shower control system. The project required several specifications of acrylic control panels for thermostatic mixing valves. The panel had to be bonded to the outermost layer of a metal housing and carry the GROHE logo, temperature numbers, and functional color indicators.

GROHE’s Tier 1 supplier in China contacted Spar Panel for sample development because the previous acrylic supplier’s samples had failed approval by the German headquarters. The main problems included:

  • Insufficient uniformity in screen-printed color blocks; black dust impurities appeared in the white base areaand could not meet GROHE’s color consistency requirements.
  • CNC-machined circular holes exceeded the dimensional tolerance, causing poor fit during sample testing.
  • The waterproof performance of the adhesive was insufficient, with risk of loosening or debonding under long-term 50°C hot-water conditions.

GROHE needed Spar Panel to solve these issues quickly and deliver qualified samples so the assembled parts could be sent to the engineering department at GROHE headquarters in Germany for testing.

2. Technical Challenges and Solutions

Key Process Issues and Implementation Solutions for Acrylic Operation Panels Used in Shower Equipment

For this project, GROHE set requirements far beyond conventional industry standards for spot-color matching, screen-printing registration, ink-layer flatness, forming accuracy, and long-term stability in high-temperature and high-humidity bathroom environments. After receiving the sample development request, Spar Panel’s engineering team analyzed the defects in the original samples and identified three core technical challenges.

Core Technical Challenges

  • Multi-spot-color screen printing: The back side of a 3 mm thick high-transparency acrylic sheetrequired five spot colors including dark gray for the logo and temperature numbers, red for hot-water indicators, blue for cold-water indicators, a pure white background layer, and a black light-shielding layer. The process required strict control of multi-color registration, color uniformity, and ink-layer cleanliness.
  • Precision forming: The outer contour and center holes had to be cut by CNC machining with dimensional tolerance controlled within ±0.06 mm. The edge also required a uniform 5D radius chamferto provide a smooth, safe touch experience for end users.
  • Waterproof adhesive reliability in high humidity: The back of the acrylic panel required high-adhesion, waterproof-grade 3M adhesivecapable of resisting long-term humid bathroom conditions without debonding or water ingress.

The key to this bathroom system panel project was to balance color accuracy, long-term weather resistance, ink-layer flatness, adhesive compatibility, registration accuracy, and cross-batch production consistency. Spar Panel developed repeatable mass-production solutions for each challenge and helped the sample pass approval by GROHE headquarters in Germany on the first submission.

2.1 Color and Registration Control for Complex Screen Printing

GROHE required German-style quality control for acrylic panel screen printing. Common risks in back-side printing included registration deviation, black specks trapped in the ink layer, and uneven color distribution. GROHE required five spot-color inks to match its brand standards precisely, with print position deviation not exceeding ±0.3 mm. Any color contamination or visible defect would affect the premium look of the product and fail incoming inspection.

To solve these issues, Spar Panel controlled the process from substrate selection, printing sequence, and production inspection:

  • Substrate selection: We used high-transparency, yellowing-resistant Mitsubishi acrylic sheets from Japan to improve ink adhesion and long-term weather resistance in high-temperature and high-humidity bathroom environments.
  • Process optimization: We adopted back-side acrylic screen printing with a standardized color sequence: dark gray ink for the logo and temperature numbers, red ink for hot-water indicators, blue ink for cold-water indicators, pure white ink as the base layer, and black light-shielding ink as the final layer. This five-color spot printing structureproduced the surface color effect required by GROHE.
  • Precision control: We implemented a “one color, one film, one screen” system. All five screensused the same cross-registration reference system, locking machine printing registration within ±0.25 mm, better than GROHE’s ±0.3 mm High-temperature and high-humidity aging tests were performed after printing to verify long-term color stability.
  • Scenario adaptation: Back-side printing allows the acrylic substrate itself to protect the ink layer, helping prevent water vapor, cleaning, and long-term bathroom use from causing ink peeling or fading.

2.2 CNC Precision Machining and Forming

During CNC processing of 3 mm thick acrylic sheets, common issues include edge burrs, dimensional deviation, and uneven radius chamfers. Based on German precision standards, GROHE required the cutting tolerance for the outer contour and center holes to be controlled within ±0.06 mm. The 2.5D radius chamfer also had to be smooth and even, avoiding sharp edges and matching the premium user experience of high-end bathroom products.

Spar Panel used high-precision CNC equipment with fine tungsten-carbide milling tools. By optimizing toolpaths and layered cutting parameters, we reduced material stress and prevented burr formation. We also used the same positioning reference as the screen-printing process, ensuring accurate alignment between printed graphics and CNC-machined features. Final machining accuracy was stably controlled within ±0.05 mm, exceeding GROHE’s specified standard. The refined 2.5D radius chamfer delivered smooth, flawless edges and matched GROHE’s high-end bathroom product requirements.

2.3 Adhesive Stability and Waterproof Performance in High-Humidity Environments

After assembly, the acrylic panel would be used for a long time in a humid bathroom environment. Water vapor and hot-water spray could enter through the bonding gap between the panel and the metal housing. This created strict requirements for long-term adhesive stability and waterproof sealing. If the adhesive system was not suitable, risks such as edge lifting, debonding, and bonding failure could directly affect product life and safety.

To solve this issue, we selected 3M VHB 5925 waterproof-grade adhesive matched to the acrylic substrate. This adhesive provides high bonding strength and strong water resistance, helping resist long-term moisture exposure. We also controlled ink-layer flatness and acrylic cutting accuracy to ensure bubble-free, gap-free adhesive lamination. High-temperature and high-humidity aging tests simulating long-term bathroom use were performed to verify adhesive strength, waterproof performance, and stability, preventing edge lifting, debonding, and bonding failure.

3. Project Results
